Jose Mourinho was never the right man to manage Manchester United
In 2012, before Sir Alex Ferguson embarked upon his final season in charge at Manchester United, Jose Mourinho was among the favourite candidates to take the main job at Old Trafford. Club director Sir Bobby Charlton, however, made it clear that he was not the right man for the job.
In spite of this feeling within the upper echelons of the club, Mourinho was given the reigns. The result? The worst home record in 26 years and fewer points on the board than were achieved by David Moyes and Louis Van Goal at the same stage.
Of course, it is rather early to judge Mourinho’s tenure, but there is a strong argument to be made that he was never the right man for the job.
