On Monday, a former Williamsburg high school teacher was found guilty of raping a just-graduated student.
William Abreu, 47, now faces up to 4 years in prison for the 2009 summer attack on the 17-year-old, recent graduate of the school in his office.
The woman, now 24, flew in from Honduras to testify against the former Progress High School vice-principal, who she told jurors approached her on graduation day to offer her a summer job.
Not long after, he raped the
woman on his office couch, threatening to call immigration if she didn’t give in, she testified.
He was fired by the city Department of Education in November 2013, after the allegations surfaced.
Abreu’s head fell forward into his hands upon hearing he’d been convicted. His family, who packed a single row in the courtroom, tightly held hands but did not cry.
The victim was not present to hear the verdict.
“This defendant was an assistant principal who violated the trust of a vulnerable teenager when he coerced her to engage in an unwanted sex act using her immigration status as leverage,” Brooklyn DA Ken Thompson said in a statement, which also lauded the woman for her “courage” in coming forward.
The jury acquitted Abreu on three misdemeanor charges, stemming from separate allegations by a second student who claimed he’d offered her $4,000 to have sex with other men.
Abreu, who is out on $25,000 bail, declined comment as he left court.
Authorities have said Abreu schemed with fellow Progress High School educator Juan Martinez to rape students at the school.
Martinez copped a plea to forcing a16-year-old girl to perform oral sex on him in Jan. 2016 in exchange for a plea deal.
The terminally ill-man was sentenced to 10 years probation, law enforcement sources said.
Abreu will return on Nov. 29 for sentencing.
