Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi is ready to call time on his career at Stamford Bridge if the right offer is on the table in January, after failing to force his way into Antonio Conte’s plans.
N’Golo Kante has been Conte’s preferred defensive option in his 3-4-3 formation, with Mikel yet to play a single Premier League minute this season under the Italian.
Chelsea is currently in scintillating form having picked up maximum points from their last five league games, and Mikel has had to watch on patiently for an opportunity to shine.
With Kante and Nemanja Matic making the central midfield berths their own in recent weeks, Nigeria captain Mikel accepts he may have to bring an end to his illustrious 10-year association with the club since arriving from Norwegian outfit Lyn.
‘We will wait and see what happens in January,’ he said, as quoted by ESPN FC.
‘For the first time in my career, this is happening to me and I have to stand up and deal with it.
‘It is what it is but I’m training hard every day and I always wish the team the best and I am happy we are doing well.
‘I’ve been at Chelsea a long time. Managers come and go, players come and go. I’ve been at Chelsea a long time and these things happen in football. So we will have to make that decision when January comes.’
Mikel, who has won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League among other honours in west London, made 33 appearances last term but a lack of action since has made him unsure of his future at Stamford Bridge.
