Apple iOS 10.0.1: Should You Upgrade?

Well that didn’t take long. In what is possibly the shortest gap ever between iOS releases, Apple has immediately upgraded iOS 10 (and its many secret features) to iOS 10.0.1. But with little warning should you install this surprise update?

Who Is iOS 10.0.1 For?

As with all Apple iOS 10 releases, iOS 10.0.1 is designed for the iPhone 5
or later, iPad 2 or later, iPad mini 2 or later, iPad Pro range and the 6th generation iPod touch or later. Users will receive upgrade prompts automatically, but if you don’t get one for any reason it can be triggered manually by going to Settings > General > Software Update

As always, the size of iOS updates differs depending on your device. iOS 10.0.1 is a small update weighing in at between 25MB and 60MB.

The Deal Breakers

This is fast becoming a standard warning, but iOS 10.0.1 will remove any jailbreak you may have installed. Major jailbreaking teams Pangu and TaiG have really struggled to crack recent iOS releases and that doesn’t look set to change any time soon.

Elsewhere the ever vigilant Apple Support Communities has reports of isolated iOS 10.0.1 incidents regarding disappearing keyboards, jumbled camera rolls and trouble with iCloud backups but there is no momentum behind any of them at this stage. As always, if this changes I will post an update.

So What Do You Get?
Unlike the massive iOS 10 update, iOS 10.0.1 (as the version number implies) is much smaller. This is purely a bug and security fix for issues that existed in iOS 10 and Apple’s official change list describes them as follows:
Recommended by Forbes

  •     Fixes an issue that could prevent recognising “Hey Siri” requests\
  •    Fixes issues that could affect audio quality for calls made over VoLTE
  •     Fixes issues that could impact Bluetooth connectivity and pairing with Apple Watch
  •    Improves stability of the Camera and Contacts apps

Interestingly none of these issues had been widely reported by users prior to Apple addressing them. This is an encouraging sign given both iOS 8 and iOS 9 were plagued by long running issues that Apple ignored for update after update. Should Apple return to the kind of stability users became accustomed to between iOS 4 and iOS 7, it would be very welcome indeed.

In addition to this iOS 10.0.1 also addresses a security hole in the kernel where a validation issue could potentially be exploited by applications to disclose data from the kernel memory. Another potential jailbreaking route closed!

Apple iOS 10.0.1 Install Verdict: Wait And See

Despite a very brief rollout problem at launch, iOS 10 was Apple’s smoothest major upgrade in years. As such the speed with which Apple has already patched it is a surprise and a source of possible concern.

Consequently, if you are suffering no problems with iOS 10, my opinion is you should sit tight. iOS 10.0.1 provides fixes for issues almost no-one reported in the first place and adds zero new features. With a couple of iOS 10.0.1 bugs also being picked up, the risk doesn’t seem worth it.

Should iOS 10.0.1 remain out the headlines in a week’s time then by all means upgrade, but right now you aren’t missing out on anything by flipping the switch straightaway.

The Road Ahead

With the proactive stance Apple has demonstrated so far with iOS 10, I wouldn’t be surprised to see iOS 10.0.2 before long. Given Apple is also making a deliberate effort to block off all jailbreaking attempts these days, any exploit is being tackled with a standalone point release.

As for iOS 10.1, that is likely to form the basis for an upgrade Apple has already promised: upgrading camera functionality to add an improved portrait mode which intelligently adds bokeh (blur) to the background. That is unlikely to arrive before October.
