Lionel Messi broke 50-year-old goal record with hat trick against Celtic

Lionel Messi didn't just break one record on Tuesday in the Champions League with Barcelona in the win over Celtic. Yes, he did pass Cristiano Ronaldo for most hat tricks in the competition's history, but he also broke a long-standing mark. Messi passed legend Alfredo Di Stefano for the most goals in official matches by an Argentinian.

Messi reached
515 on Tuesday, while Di Stefano, finished at 514, per Mundo Deportivo. The Barcelona superstar has 459 goals with Barcelona, with the rest coming with Argentina. Di Stefano scored 485 for his clubs (River Plate, Huracan, Millionarios, Real Madrid, Espanyol) and the rest for his countries. Di Stefano actually played for the Argentina and Spain national teams. Fun fact -- he actually played some games for Colombia as well, but those games aren't recognized by FIFA.

Di Stefano, who passed away two years ago, finished playing in 1966. So for 50 years, he was Argentina's top scorer ever...until Tuesday.
